Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS)

NCB Requirements for Certified Peer Recovery and Support Specialists

All training for initial certification must have been completed within the past five years. Continuing education for certification renewals needs to be completed within the renewal period.
 
  • Lived Experience: A certified peer recovery and support specialist shall be in recovery for at least two years prior to certification. Recovery is characterized by continual growth and improvement in one’s health and wellness that may involve setbacks. Because setbacks are a natural part of life, resilience becomes a key component of recovery.
  • Peer Recovery and Support Work Experience: 475 hours of volunteer or paid work experience in one or more of the IC&RC PR domains below under a NCB Certified PRSS Supervisor.
  • Education and Training: A high school diploma or jurisdictionally certified high school equivalency is required (HiSet or GED). Additionally, successful completion of one of the three NCB approved, Nevada State sanctioned PRSS 101 foundational training courses is required. Accepted courses are provided by Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies (CASAT) and the Foundation for Recovery (FFR) and cover the IC&RC Peer Recovery domains of Advocacy, Mentoring/Education, Recovery/Wellness Support, and Ethical Responsibility.
  • Non-Clinical Supervision: 25 hours of supervised experience with a minimum of five hours in each IC&RC PR domain under a NCB Certified PRSS Supervisor.
  • Examination: All applicants are required to pass the IC&RC Peer Recovery Examination.IC&RC has developed a Candidate Guide for professionals preparing for the Peer Recovery Examination. If the exam needs to be retaken due to failing or missing the appointment, there will be an $80 retake fee.
  • Code of Ethics: The applicant must agree to adhere to the Nevada Certification Board’s peer recovery specific code of ethics.
  • Cost of Certification (inclusive of the IC&RC examination)
    • PRSS-I application: $35
    • PRSS application and testing fee: $165
  • Residency Requirement: You must live or work in Nevada at least 51% of the time to be certified by the Nevada Certification Board and to maintain that certification.
  • Recertification: A renewal fee of $100 and 20 hours of continuing education in the IC&RC Peer Recovery Domains* earned every two years, including six hours in ethics.

* For all continuing education hours, please submit a certificate of attendance or participation from an approved training organization that includes the following information:

  • Name of training organization(s) and/or sponsor(s)
  • Title of training/conference
  • Date(s) of training/conference
  • Name of participant/attendee
  • Hours of attendance/participation
